Yes, I've spend a good amount of time learning how to edit the curves and levels versus just your basic contrast to get bold colors against super dark settings.

Dark colors can help, but I prefer to Burn parts of my image. I probably use the Burn tool most often. I also like to use the dark color overlays and, again, prefer curves to regular contrast changes.
